“The Rebel Girl” celebrated Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a New Yorker who first spoke out for socialism at age 15. When Joe Hill wrote this song in 1915, both were leaders of the Industrial Workers of the World, known as the Wobblies, a radical labor organization that welcomed workers regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender.
